The race around Flanders ended unhappily for the world champion.
The trio was driving along the side of the road when they ran into a stopped engine. Van Aert, who also found himself on the ground during the stage, avoided him, van der Poel did the same, and Alaphilippe was less fortunate. He crashed into the engine, flew over the handlebars and lay in pain on the road.

The pitch of the world champion, however, was not the only complication in this race around Flanders. The cyclists had to stop in front of the locks because of the train. Just before that, he jumped out of the main Edvald Boasson Hagen, crossed the track, and then the other cyclists got stuck on the wrong side of the railroad tracks.
“Knowing the timetable is part of preparing for the Flanders race,” joked one of the twitter users.
