The second man in the standings, Kelderman, benefited from the work of his Sunweb teammate Australian Jaie Hindley, who “evaporated” from the Almeid front group by increasing the pace seven kilometers before the finish in the first category climb. The 22-year-old Portuguese completed the rest of the hill alone behind the leading trio and maintained a lead after a heroic performance.

In the final tens of meters, he defeated both members of the Sunweb team Geoghegan Hart and secured the fifth stage victory of the Ineos Grenadiers team at this year’s Giro, which she lost at the beginning due to the injury of her presumed leader Geraint Thomas. Kelderman finished second for six bonus seconds and reduced the original distance of 56 seconds on Almeida to a quarter of a minute. The Portuguese debutant on the Grand Tour finished fourth with a gap of 37 seconds behind the winner.

Another loss today was taken by the original favorites Jakub Fuglsang or Vincenzo Nibali, who fell off the top in more than fourteen kilometers on Piancavallo and finished in the top ten. Former Gira Nibali winner is seventh three and a half minutes apart, Fuglsang out of the top ten.

Giro will enter the decisive third week off. On Tuesday, before the two challenging alpine stages, a 229 km long undulating stage from Udine to San Daniele del Friuli is on the agenda. The race ends with a Sunday time trial in Milan.
