The Austrian federal government will release EUR 40 million next year to support electric cars. In 2019 and 2020, the government, together with car importers, provided support for a total of € 93 million, and these funds have since been almost depleted. As Austrian Environment and Mobility Minister Leonore Gewessler said on Sunday, support for the purchase of one electric car increased from € 3,000 to € 5,000 during the corona crisis.

So far, the ministry has registered about 11,800 applications for support for the purchase of an electric car, of which 7,300 in July after its increase. The number of applications is roughly equally divided between private individuals and companies. The aid was paid for approximately 7,800 passenger cars, of which almost 1,100 were plug-in hybrids and more than 1,500 for electric motorcycles and mopeds. In addition to vehicles, the Ministry also financially supports the purchase of trucks and the construction of charging infrastructure.

“With another 40 million euros to support electric mobility, we will manage ecological change in 2021,” the APA quoted the minister as saying. With the help of financial support, electric mobility is expanding significantly. In September, 1,946 new electric passenger cars were registered, which represents about 9% of the total number of registered cars in Austria.

For the Minister, transport in Austria is the biggest source of concern in terms of climate protection – while carbon dioxide emissions in other areas are declining, transport in transport has risen again year – on – year.
