Julian Alaphilippe and his fall at Around Flanders 2020

Van der Poel won the famous classic.

BRATISLAVA. Only about 37 kilometers remained to the finish line of the famous classic Around Flanders, when the three biggest favorites got to escape.

The new world champion is Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe, Belgian Wout van Aert and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel.

No one else was enough for them. It was approaching the captivating finale of the 104th year of the monumental classic.

After only a few kilometers in the escape, however, the race ended cruelly for Alaphilipp.

The Frenchman was just following his opponents. The road seemed safe, so he bowed his head to say something on the team radio.

But at that very moment, the trio passed the accompanying motorcycles, which slowed down at the curb.

Both Van der Poel and Van Aert went around the motorcycles. However, Alaphilippe did not notice anything and caught one of the bikers with his shoulders. He flew over the bike and landed hard on the road.

The race is over for him. After a while, he was treated by paramedics directly on the road. Alaphilippe held his hand and screamed in pain. The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

His two rivals finally made the escape to the finish line. The thrilling sprint was finally won by Van der Poel, who defeated Van Aert by only a few centimeters.
