“The fire is basically localized and the tourist activities continue because they were not affected by the fire,” Pascal Shelutete, a spokesman for the Tanzanian National Parks Authority (TANAPA), told AFP. According to previous findings, the fire was probably caused by carriers accompanying the climbers to the mountain. The vegetation fire broke out for unknown reasons at a higher altitude, so the firefighting work was demanding and the locals also helped the firefighters and students were also called in.

Kilimanjaro is the highest open mountain in the world. It is located in Tanzania on the border with Kenya. The massif consists of three idle stratovolcanoes – Kibo (5895 m), Mawenzi (5149 m) and Shira (3962 m). The Maasai name of the mountain is Oldoinyo Oibor (White Mountain), Swahili Kilima Njaro Shining Mountain). Since 1973, the mountain has been part of Kilimanjaro National Park. In 1987, the country was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
