The organizers described the stage as the royal test of the Apennines. She crowned Gira for the first week, the first day of the program is free on Monday.

In the profile were two climbs of the first and two climbs of the second category, including the famous hike to Passo Lanciano. The decision was to be made in the final ascent to Roccaraso. In total, the riders had to climb more than 4,000 meters.

In the beginning, the peloton kept together, sporadic escapes had no chance of success. There was a sprint bonus in front of the first hill, and shortly before it, the quartet of Guerreiro, Eduardo Sepulveda (Movistar), Ben O’Connor (NTT) and Castroviejo broke away.

Guerreiro won the prize and a four-point battle between Arnaud Démare and Sagan took place in the peloton, with the French rider being more successful.

Other riders attacked from the main pack, Larry Warbasse (Ag2r), Kilian Frankiny (FDJ) and Giovanni Visconti (Vini Zabu) also joined the leading group. Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Emirates) later made the leak.

The peloton allowed the escape a maximum distance of about six minutes, later shortening it to four minutes.

Six kilometers before the finish line, Guerreiro and Castroviejo broke away, sharing it in a steep final climb. He showed more dynamism in the last meters of Guerreiro and enjoyed the first triumph at the events of the Grand Tour in his career.
