Geneva, Oct 14 (TASR) – A new coronavirus pandemic threatens progress in tackling tuberculosis, the world’s deadliest infectious disease, the AFP said, citing a statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday. Countries affected by tuberculosis, such as India and South Africa, have had to use resources to diagnose and treat tuberculosis to fight the coronavirus, the WHO said.

According to the organization, tuberculosis could cause 200-400,000 more deaths than the previous year, when about 1.4 million people died from the disease, although there was treatment available to combat the disease.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus noted that “The coronavirus pandemic has a serious impact on the fight against tuberculosis. Data collected by the WHO in countries with a high incidence of tuberculosis have shown that records of new cases of the disease have fallen sharply in 2020.”
