Health Minister Alain Berset said that the proportion of positive tests is very high – 15 to 16 percent.

In an effort to slow down the spread of the new coronavirus, Switzerland is introducing mandatory wearing of veils in enclosed public places from Monday, as well as a ban on the gathering of more than 15 people. The AFP agency informed about it on Sunday.

According to the new measures, it will be possible to serve food and drinks in restaurants or bars only to customers sitting at tables.

“The sharp rise in infections in recent days is worrying. This applies to all age groups and all cantons, “the government said in a statement.

“The number of infections has doubled this week,” President Simonetta Sommarug said during a press conference at which she outlined new national measures to control the spread of the virus, which were previously the responsibility of the autonomous member states – the cantons.

In response to the restrictions, several hundred people took part in a protest in front of the Swiss federal government in Bern.

Health Minister Alain Berset said that the proportion of positive tests is very high – 15 to 16 percent.

At first, the coronavirus pandemic avoided the Alpine nation, but over the past week, authorities say the number of new infections has risen by as much as 146 percent, the largest percentage increase in Europe, AFP writes. To date, 1,822 people have died from COVID-19.
